I was shocked to learn recently that 40 percent of women have visible hair loss by age 40. Hairstylists know this better than anyone, as they spend hours talking with their clients about every possible concern they might have, and as a result, more salons are expanding their services to include treatments for thinning hair.

“My male and female clients who complain of thinning hair and hair loss—especially women with new babies—are looking for a convenient fix that doesn't involve making a doctor's appointment,” says Nunzio Saviano, founder of the eponymous salon in New York.

In an effort to provide his clients with an effective solution, Saviano recently introduced Oxilogica, which he likens to an oxygen facial for your scalp and hair. “Madonna was one of the first celebrities to endorse the oxygen facial, and after that they became really popular," he says.

"Just like how oxygen helps clear out the pores on the face, when used on the scalp, Oxilogica helps clear the hair follicles of buildup. Thinning is becoming a much larger problem for women now than in generations past—one reason is that they’re only washing their hair once a week, but using dry shampoo and other styling products every day, which creates a ton of buildup. The buildup clogs the hair follicles, and over time, stunts hair growth.”

The four-step treatment detoxes, nourishes and stimulates the scalp using multiple products, scalp massage and a high-tech professional oxygen-molecule machine that increases penetration of the treatment’s active ingredient, stem cells from the stella alpina flower that Saviano says have been proven to encourage hair growth. “I spent two years working with scientists in Italy to develop these products and treatment," he explains. "These particular plant stem cells have been proven to stimulate hair follicles on both men and women."

Massage also plays a big role in the Oxilogica treatment: to start, detox drops are massaged into the scalp to break up buildup and debris; later, hair loss drops are massaged onto a clean scalp, concentrating on thinning areas. "My grandmother always told me growing up, 'You brush your scalp, not your hair.' The boost in circulation is essential."

In addition to a reduction in breakage, flaking and/or shedding, most of Saviano's clients see hair growth after completing one treatment every two weeks for three months—primarily around the hairline, but also in other areas. "It's not instant gratification, but we are taking care of the root of the problem," he says. "When the hair follicle is weak, it needs to be strengthened, and we can achieve that with this."

Although Saviano’s salon is the only one with this exact treatment, many stylists across the country perform scalp services to address these concerns. “Ask for something that clarifies the hair to remove product buildup, as well as conditions it,” the stylist says.
