A few years ago, I was shopping at Ulta when the customer next to me dropped a bottle of nail polish. The bottle smashed and nail polish spilled all over the floor. It was a mess. But Ulta employees must be used to this sort of thing, because instead of freaking out, an employee calmly grabbed a box of sugar from the back and poured it all over the spill. The employee then easily wiped up the nail polish and swept up the excess sugar. It was pure magic. So when I spilled a bottle of my favorite bottle of Trust Fund Beauty nail polish all over my bathroom floor, I decided to give the trick a try.
The first thing I did was pour sugar all over the nail polish spill. I waited a few minutes for the sugar to absorb the nail polish.
The nail polish started to clump up, making it easy to wipe up with a paper towel. I used a broom and dust pan to clean up the extra sugar.
It’s amazing how well this trick works. I’m not sure who discovered that sugar would soak up nail polish, but my bathroom floor is grateful. Had I not seen this trick in action before, I would have used nail polish remover. BAD IDEA. Whatever you do, do not use nail polish remover to clean up spilled nail polish. Nail polish remover will ruin the finish of your floors (especially if they are wood).
Expert cleaner Jolie Kerr told Jezbel that a great way to remove nail polish is to use WD-40. Just spray the spill with WD-40 and use a clean rag to wipe up the nail polish. If there’s residue, just use a little a bit of soapy water applied with a rag or sponge. Another easy way to remove nail polish for floors and walls is to use a Magic Eraser. Just be careful to take into account the finish and varnish of the surface before cleaning it. Always test spot an area before you use any type of cleaning solution.
