Two hours ahead of the 2020 BAFTAs, things are “popping off” inside Emilia Clarke’s hotel suite in London. Getting ready with the “ultimate dream team,” the Game of Thrones star and newly named Clinique Global Ambassador is looking to makeup artist Lynsey Alexander and hairstylist Sam McKnight to help her channel the dark, moody glamour of the ’90s above the neck. “Think ’90s supermodels, but me—I’m not a supermodel!” she says, laughing.
Naturally, the first step is creating a supernatural glow. “The night before I will have tried to be very good: Drank lots of water [and] gotten lots of sleep,” she says with a giggle. “Neither of those things happened last night.” But thankfully, a few pumps of her unique Clinique iD serum—a customized mix of the brand's Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly base and an active concentrate booster formulated to help fight fatigue—should do the trick. Warming up the bespoke blend up in her hands, she then pats it into her complexion. “We do really good prep so [the] skin is looking nice and gorgeous, which you really, really want on a red carpet,” she explains. “You want to look fresh and dewy.” Then it’s time to let Alexander work her magic, giving Clarke a sculpted glow, tawny smoky eyes, and a supernatural set of lashes. Afterwards, Clarke turns to McKnight for a sculpted, slicked back chignon, which the hair pro sets into place with blasts of his Modern Hairspray.
“The beading is insane!” says Clarke as she reaches for her slinky Schiaparelli spring 2020 couture gown, which features a spaghetti-strap silhouette and shimmering stitching in the shape of a skeleton. “This is couture, ladies and gentlemen.” After cutting away on camera to slip on her gown, Clarke is set—“Ta da, she’s ready!”—and ready to dazzle the red carpet as only she can.
