“I grew up literally terrified of being judged because I knew that I was different,” says singer and songwriter Hayley Kiyoko. “So I made it a point with my music to make sure that people don’t feel alone.” Known by her fans as “lesbian Jesus,” Kiyoko has spent the last four years using her musical prowess to bring queer representation to pop music, with hit singles from “Girls Like Girls” to “What I Need.” She’s been busy over the last few years, and as a result she says she’s perfected the “oh, my gosh, I need to look awake, I have a meeting in 10 minutes” look.

“I swear by Kate Somerville,” she says, scrubbing her face with the brand’s iconic gel cleanser. “It makes me feel like I’m in a spa.” While she often just washes her face and heads out the door, today the singer dives into a light skin-care routine to prep for makeup.

First she applies a hydrating sheet mask for 10 minutes: “I look like I have melted Kraft Singles on my face,” she jokes. Next she slathers on a hefty amount of moisturizer to prevent dryness. Understanding her skin hasn’t always been easy, Kiyoko admits: “I struggled a lot with cystic acne growing up. I heard that [it’s] caused by imbalance, so I started taking multivitamins,” which dramatically improved her complexion.

When it comes to makeup, Kiyoko first adds a dab of concealer under her eyes and follows up with a super-light foundation. Then the singer contours her complexion with a dark brown bronzer and accentuates the apples of her cheeks with a shimmering blush stick.

After swiping on a layer of rose-tinted lip balm, Kiyoko adds a dash of khaki-colored liner to her waterline and the tops of her lids. “It’s great, you can be really messy,” she says while smudging it into her lashline. Lashes are curled and set with MAC’s defining mascara, which, according to the California-born beauty, “stays on all day.”

For a set of glimmering cheekbones, Kiyoko pats on ColourPop’s highlighter. “It’s really cheap,” she notes. “Six bucks!” The singer then defines her pout with a flesh-toned liner. “I have to get the exact triangle corner in my lip,” she says while filling in the area and topping it off with a “lip no lip” natural lipstick color. And because she hates a sticky gloss, the blonde reaches for Fenty Beauty’s seamless formula for a hint of shine.

As a final step Kiyoko spritzes on a face mist followed by a setting spray: “It has SPF 50, so it’s bomb.” With a little dance in the mirror, she’s totally awake and ready to go.
