They're sweet, they're feminine, and they're about to be absolutely everywhere.
Stars love a throwback beauty moment, and right now it’s time for the ‘60s to shine. Bouffants, doe-eyed lashes, cat-eyes, and hair bows inspired by some of the decade’s biggest beauty icons like Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy, and Sophia Loren have flooded the red carpet and trickled into our own hair and makeup looks.
Thanks to sweet, uncomplicated and soft feminine vibe of these retro makeup and hairstyles, the ‘60s are still swinging in 2020. And that’s exactly why these classic looks are some of spring’s biggest beauty trends.
Ahead, Hollywood’s top hair and makeup artists break down how to recreate the decade’s most beloved beauty looks.
Half-Up Bouffant
Brigitte Bardot’s signature heap of tousled tendrils with the sides pinned back set the bar for bombshell hair. To give Shailene Woodley a similar vibe, hairstylist Keith Carpenter misted volumizer and dry shampoo through her hair to make it lush and then teased her crown.
Baby-Doll Lashes
Mod icon Twiggy opened our eyes to the doe-like power of graphic false lashes applied on top and bottom lids. Makeup artist Jo Baker mimicked the effect by drawing slashes of black liner under Lucy Boynton’s eyes with a brush.
Pale Pout
When Tippi Hedren stepped onscreen with glossy baby pink lips in 1963’s The Birds, women everywhere realized that swiping a shiny nude color on your mouth makes it look sexy and pillowy.
Flips
In the ’60s flipping out was a good look—at least for your hair, as Lauren Hutton proved—and it’s still a favorite with stars like Olivia Culpo. Her hairstylist Ruslan Nureev says a 1-inch curling iron creates the perfect bouncy swoop.
Pastel Shadow
Watercolor hues are undeniably cheerful on eyes, as Marisa Berenson first showed us. To help Marsai Martin’s eyes look big and bright, makeup artist Shannon Pezzetta diffused a pale blue shadow from her lids up to her brow bones.
Curled Ends
There was no “I woke up like this” hair back in Sharon Tate’s day. Sculpted, blow-dried ends give your style a soft, flattering shape, and hairstylist Harry Josh (who did Jodie Comer’s look) likes to combine them with a center part.
Hair Bows
Catherine Deneuve gave the cute little hair bow a grown-up charm when she teased her do at the crown before putting on the accessory—a trick hairstylist Jenda Alcorn employed on Elle Fanning.
Cat Eyes
Legends like Sophia Loren pioneered the technique, and nearly every star copies it today. Winged liner gives the impression of thick lashes and wide- open eyes—it’s flirty in an innocent way.
Flushed Cheeks
Jane Birkin and other ’60s It girls introduced what was then a novel concept: fresh, natural makeup. Swirling a rosy blush on the apples of your cheeks is still the most popular way to get a healthy, lit-from-within glow.
