You’ve probably heard of box braids (I mean, who hasn’t), but allow me to introduce you to bohemian box braids. Instead of braiding all the way down to the ends, with bohemian box braids, only the first couple of inches are braided. You may have seen this look on Zoë Kravitz, but TBH, to get her super-tiny bohemian box braids, you’d legit have to sit in a chair for hours—like, six, maybe even seven.
But because no one has time for that, this week on The Braid Up, we’re giving you a similar style that takes less time: large bohemian box braids. It’ll give you the Zoë look minus the insane time investment. Our hair braiding guru Stasha Harris shows us how it’s done.
Down to recreate this look? Here’s everything you need to know:
- 1.Wash your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo. These box braids are going to stay in your hair for a while, so you want to make sure your hair is as clean as possible before you commit. A sulfate-free shampoo will get your roots fresh without stripping its natural oils.
- 2.Make sure your parts are on point. To get the sharpest lines for your bohemian box braids, use a rattail comb and a non-flaky edge-control gel to make sure your parts are sleek.
- 3.Lay your edges with a toothbrush if you have trouble using a rattail comb—it’ll help you spread the edge-control gel evenly throughout your hair. First, brush your baby hairs forward, then add some gel onto the brush, directing your edges toward your hairline in whatever shape you prefer.
- 4.Focus on your scalp care. It’s extra important to keep your natural hair clean and moisturized if you want to promote hair growth while your hair is in a protective style. Spritz a leave-in conditioner on your scalp to help hydrate any dry patches.
