We may be hitting peak 90s revival, but when it comes to eyebrow shape, thicker, more natural brows—a la Brooke Shields—seem to be here to stay.
And while there are plenty of ways to get bushier brows—pencils, tinting kits, and microblading—one of the most popular methods right now is called brow lamination.
What is brow lamination?
"Brow lamination is a chemical brow treatment that breaks down the inner protein chains of the hair to make the brows more lifted and fluffier," explains Rene de la Garza, celebrity brow artist and founder of Brow Down Studio.
It's a pretty simple procedure: The brow artist simply applies a chemical solution to the eyebrows to straighten, lift, and lock the hairs into place, covering any sparseness and making brows look fuller.
Brow lamination is great for all hair types, says de la Garza. "If your brows are curly or coarse, the treatment helps to smooth and tame the hair. If your brows are thin or sparse, brow lamination can set the brows in place to cover any sparseness."
How long does a brow lamination take?
It’s best to see a professional brow artist for a brow lamination service, says de la Garza. "Brow lamination can be harmful to the integrity of the brow hairs if the solutions are left on for too long."
You'll need to set aside about an hour for the whole process. Here’s what to expect:
- The brow artist applies a cream to brows to lift up the hairs.
- Then, they brush the hairs upward to form uniform vertical lines.
- Next, the brow artist will apply a neutralizing solution to "seal" brows into place.
- Finally, they'll apply a nourishing oil to hydrate hair and minimize skin irritation that could be caused by the chemical solution.
Brow lamination vs microblading
Both brow lamination are semi-permanent eyebrow treatments, but they differ in important ways. Primarily, brow lamination is a gentler option that yields more natural looking results, since there are no needles or ink involved. The downside: Brow lamination doesn't have nearly as much longevity.
How long does a brow lamination last?
While the effects of microblading can last for a couple of years, results from brow lamination typically fade within four to six weeks, depending on the hair texture, says de la Garza.
Does brow lamination ruin your brows?
As far as cosmetic beauty procedures go, brow lamination is one of the most painless and minimally invasive out there. But the procedure does require the use of a chemical solution, which can cause dryness or irritation, particularly in those with sensitive skin. To help prevent this from happening, de la Garza recommends discontinuing the use of active products like retinols, glycolic, lactic acids or chemical exfoliants and peels prior to treatment.
What's more, it's possible to damage the hair if you leave the chemical solution on for too long, says de la Garza, which is why it's important to leave this work to the pros.
