“You want to make your eyes look as sparkly and hypnotic as possible,” the makeup artist Marcelo Gutierrez told me on a recent phone call, as I lamented the fact that my face, now mostly obscured by a mask, felt shrouded in anonymity. Suddenly, my go-to wash of NARS’s flesh-hued Nepal shadow was too barely-there; and a thin stroke of chocolate-colored liquid liner, which once popped my brown eyes, hardly made a difference. “Using colored liners is a really easy way to play around,” said Gutierrez, who has been lighting up Instagram as of late with his prismatic etchings.
I heeded Gutierrez’s words—making sure to brush up my brows with a clear gel, as he noted—and was pleasantly surprised: Chanel’s felt-tip metallic mauve was an instant mood boost, while a touch of Marc Jacobs’s limited-edition gold crayon in my inner corners bounced brilliantly off of a one-off yellow paisley mask by Alexis Badiyi. I even dabbled in neon, thanks to the Manhattan-based designer Maryam Nassir Zadeh, whose electric-colored bolts at eye-level, circa fall 2018, now feel not only appropriately spirited but prescient. At the time, Fara Homidi, who masterminded the vibrant look, mused, “It’s a pop of color that symbolizes something futuristic, something to look forward to.”
Taking a page from the Italian jeweler Delfina Delettrez, who’s long been known to sport a thick stripe of teal kohl under her lower lashes, I used Dior’s new dual-ended stick to scrawl on a swipe of midnight blue, layering it with the attached glimmering cream for good measure. Had I gone too far?, the minimalist in me began to worry. Gutierrez, however, was quick to set me at ease: “The world is a mess and this is an opportunity to play and have fun,” he said reassuringly. “If we can find a lighthearted moment in our day-to-day, take it and run with it.”
