You may have heard conflicting advice when it comes to caring for your skin post-facial treatment — like whether or not you should wash your face afterwards. To find out once and for all, we spoke to Brooklyn-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Erin Gilbert. Ahead, she explains if you can wash your face after a facial and if so, what you should use to do so.
Can I Wash My Face After a Facial?
Many of us wonder what proper post-facial care looks like. According to Gilbert, the right course of action depends upon your skin type and your environment.
“Most facials are designed to leave your skin well moisturized and happy,” she explains. “If you have oily skin, live in an urban — and thus dirtier — environment, or have a preferred particular skin care regimen, there is no harm in washing your face after a facial.”
In fact, washing your face after a facial can rid your skin of surface dirt and oil, she says.
How to Care for Skin After a Facial
“In general, I would suggest not washing your face right after a facial and simply cleansing with a gentle cleanser at night,” Gilbert says. “You can also moisturize as needed. However, your skin should not feel dry after a facial. If it does, discuss it with your facialist to strike the right balance at your next treatment.”
After gently cleansing, be sure to follow up with a hydrating facial moisturizer, to keep the skin hydrated post-treatment.
What Ingredients to Avoid After a Facial
If your facial has included any products like alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs), a chemical peel or another type of exfoliating product, Gilbert suggests steering clear of these ingredients for at least a day or two to avoid irritation.
